Comprehensive Buying Guide for Girls Gymnastics Leotards

Gymnastics leotards are an essential for any budding gymnast, whether you’re a beginner or a professional. But with such a wide array of colours and styles available, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed or get carried away while shopping. That’s why it’s so important to consider the various elements of your gymnastics leotard carefully so that you know you’re making the right choice. Think about factors such as the fit, shape, cut, brand, sleeves and measurements in order to get the very best option for you.

Whether you’re buying a competition leotard or a training leotard, your personal preferences are hugely important.

Getting the right fit from your leotard

Although there are guidelines for how a leotard should fit, there is no definitive answer, as again it will depend on preferences. Ask a group of gymnasts, parents and coaches how a gymnastics leotard should fit, and chances are you’ll receive a wide variety of answers.

If a leotard is too tight, it can cause discomfort, and this can all too easily distract a gymnast from their practice or routine. On the other hand, a leotard which is too big could be dangerous as it might end up catching on the equipment and causing harm. Leotards that are too big can also bunch around the hips and waist, which again can cause discomfort, as well as spoiling the look of the garment.

Training leotard fits can be purchased with a little bit more growth room. These leotards should fit snugly on the shoulders and torso, but can leave a little more room in the rear for comfort. This ensures that you get a lot of use from the training leotard and aren’t distracted by discomfort and pinching when working on skills. In training sessions, many gymnasts will wear shorts T-shirts or other garments over a leotard for convenience and sometimes for warmth during a session in a cold gym. So, during these sessions the leotard should be comfortable, flexible and often fuss-free without the crystals or embroidery you’d choose for a leotard that you always expect to be on show.

Conversely, competition leotard fits should fit like a second skin. Judges will expect competition leotards to be sleek and figure-hugging in order to show off the precision and muscle work involved in each movement. The sleeves of the leotard shouldn’t be too long, and the rear of the garment should have as tight a fit as the top half. However, although it should fit snugly, you don’t want the leotard to be restrictive. If this becomes the case, it could interfere with some of the more intricate gymnastics moves or even create a wardrobe malfunction.

What are the differences in style between a training and competition gymnastics leotard for girls?

While we’re on the topic of training and competition leotards, it’s important to understand the key differences between the two. Training leotards can have just about any colour, pattern or style you can think of. There are no limits to the cuts you can choose, the sleeve types or the design, and they can even be a little big to allow for growing room.

Meanwhile, competition leotards should be considered very differently. These leotards are usually more ‘showy’, with solid bold colour choices and lots of glitz and sparkle. For some coaches and judges, the jazzier the leotard the better. It will also depend on whether the gymnast is performing as part of a club, and whether that club has any restrictions or rules about leotards when it comes to competitions. These are all important factors which you will need to consider before purchasing your gymnastics leotard from us.

What are the different sleeve types available?

Like any aspect of the gymnastics leotard, there are many options available when it comes to the sleeves. To put it simply, there are three main categories you’ll need to choose between: tank (or sleeveless), three-quarter length, and long sleeve. However, each of these can be customised to suit your exact specifications.

Sleeveless leotards are a great option for breathability and ease. They allow sweat to escape when training and won’t cause gymnasts to feel too hot. In competitions, however, leotards with sleeves are more common.

Meanwhile, three-quarter length sleeves are great for cold weather training and are a great compromise if you’re finding it difficult to choose between sleeveless and long sleeve leotards. They can also be worn in competitions.

Long sleeved leotards are also a great option for keeping gymnasts warm in colder climates and look very elegant during competitions. Some gymnasts prefer the feel of sleeveless or three-quarter length sleeves as opposed to long sleeved options, but this is just a matter of personal preference and finding out what works best for your specific requirements.

What about leotard backs?

Like the sleeves, you have lots of options to choose from when it comes to choosing a gymnastic leotard back. Some of the most popular leotard back options include Racer, Tank, Cami Straps, Key-Hole and Wide Open.

Each of these options come with their own pros and cons, but the changes are usually as significant as those involved in choosing between sleeve lengths. Since the changes in back type are so subtle, most gymnasts will likely end up with an array of back designs within their collection of leotards.

One thing to consider when choosing a leotard back style is what undergarments you will be wearing underneath it. If you’re wearing a bra, you’ll need to take that into consideration as some designs – like Wide Open and Cami – will make it more difficult to cover any straps.

Leotard fabric choices

Anyone who has ever shopped for gymnastics leotards for girls knows that there are an abundance of fabric options available. Many gymnasts learn their favourite materials through trial and error, because of the way certain fabrics fit and feel when training. Let’s explore some of the more popular options in depth.

Metallic fabric leotards immediately catch the eye because they are flashy and bright, which helps gymnasts stand out in competitions. The material itself doesn’t have a lot of give to it, so some gymnasts may find it uncomfortable. You have to make sure that a metallic leotard fits perfectly.

Lycra fabric leotards are another hugely popular option. Unlike metallic designs, this fabric is extremely stretchy and has a lot of give to it. It’s a great option for anyone who is particularly sensitive to tight or scratchy materials. However, you need to take care when embellishing Lycra with lots of rhinestones or decorations because it may not hold up as well as stiffer options.

Velvet or velour fabrics was one of the most popular leotard options back in the late 80s and early 90s, and is still a great choice today. Not only is it extremely forgiving, but it also holds up very well. However, it is not the most breathable fabric, so gymnasts can easily get hot and sweaty.

Choosing the right leotard size

Finding the right size for a leotard can feel like a daunting task, but it is simply a matter of being smart in your decision making.

Picking the right size involves getting a few key measurements so you know exactly what you’re looking for, and these include the chest, waist, hips, inseam and girth. Most coaches and leotard manufacturers will tell you that girth is the single most important measurement involved in choosing a leotard size, but it’s still important to get all the measurements completed.

To get an accurate chest measurement, gymnasts should hold out their arms, take a deep breath and hold it. A measure can then be taken just beneath the armpits all the way around.

Waist measurements should be taken at the natural waistline and not the hips, while hip measurements should be taken lower.

Girth measurements are also known as torso measurements. Find the centre of your gymnast’s shoulders and hold the tape measure there, then take the tape measure to the crotch and bring it through to the same shoulder.

Washing and drying tips for gymnastic leotards

Most people will tell you to hand wash and dry all of your gymnastic leotards, and this is great advice when it comes to competition leotards, as well as leotards with lots of decorations. However, when it comes to training leotards made from Lycra, nylon, spandex or velvet materials, you can often get away with using a washing machine – which is great because this is the clothing a gymnast will likely wear again and again. Just make sure you wash all of your leotards together on a cold wash, then tumble dry them on low as well.
